Vaquita

The vaquita is a small porpoise endemic to the Gulf Of California in Mexico. Measuring only 1.5m in length it is the smallest of all living cetaceans. Sadly, the vaquita is on the brink of extinction. This is mainly due to the use of gillnets for illegal totoaba fishing, in which the porpoises get caught and killed. With as few as 10 individuals left, the vaquita is possibly the most endangered species on the planet. Without a fully enforced gillnet ban within their range they are sure to disappear within the next few years.
